Always predictable about run-off elections is
they are highly unpredictable.
Could Mr. Tom Copeland defeat the incumbent District 4 Commissioner Herman Robinson? Yes. It most certainly is possible despite being clobbered by Robinson on March 12th. And remember it’s been 5½ weeks since the editor at The Palm Beach Post endorsed Copeland. Plenty of time to recover.
The Lake Worth Herald made no endorsement in District 4 this year but did endorse Cathy Turk who challenged District 2 Commissioner Omari Hardy. On Tuesday, March 19th Hardy was sworn-in for a second time; this time for a three-year term. And interestingly neither the Herald or the Post gave an editorial thumbs up or thumbs down on either of the two ballot questions this year.
The very good news is there are no public meetings at City Hall this week and April looks like everything is back on schedule according the the City’s official calendar; a quite normal month in Lake Worth Beach.
About tomorrow’s run-off was this front page news in the Herald by Mr. Ben Kerr, PIO:
The City of Lake Worth Beach will be holding a runoff election on March 26 for the position of District 4 Commissioner. The two candidates on the ballot will be Tom Copeland and Herman Robinson. All residents may vote in the runoff election, not just those who previously voted or those who live in District 4.
Residents should vote at their regular polling location. Those who normally would vote at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center will instead vote at the Sunlight Community Church located at the corner of North A St and 14th Ave N.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. on March 26 and will close at 7 p.m.
About the run-off tomorrow including the recently posted SG1 campaign treasurer reports turned in by Robinson and Copeland click on this link for that information.
If you voted on March 12th in the City of Lake Worth not much has changed since becoming Lake Worth Beach except for some feathers being ruffled. So whilst on your way to your polling location tomorrow the building will still be there. All the street signs will still face the same direction and maybe a few more abandoned shopping carts will show up.
And according to Mr. Kerr, also front page news in the Herald, this City “[W]ill maintain the unique and fun character and artsy small town charm it is famous for, only now it will do so as the City of Lake Worth Beach.”
The City goes on to advise everyone still upset about the name change that you direct your energy into this year’s Great American Raft Race on July 4th and the 8th annual honoring of International Talk Like A Pirate Day on September 19th.
Now let’s take a stroll back in time. . .
Two years ago, Election Day
on March 14th, 2017.
Two years ago few thought Mr. Omari Hardy would defeat the long-time District 2 incumbent Chris McVoy, PhD. But Hardy did. And last Tuesday Commissioner Hardy was sworn in for a second term. This time for three years.
Two years ago few thought Mr. Herman Robinson would avoid a run-off with Maryann Polizzi. The editor at The Palm Beach Post called it a toss-up. But Herman won by a comfortable margin.
Two years ago few thought the voters would approve the ballot question increasing terms for elected officials from two to three years. But the voters did approve it. Now all of our elected officials serve three year terms on the Lake Worth Beach City Commission.
Two years ago a lot of people were really upset after that ballot question passed in 2017 (see results below). But now almost everyone agrees it was a really good idea.
The election results from March 14th, 2017.
And because of that ballot referendum in 2017 there will be no election of candidates in 2020. A year off in Lake Worth Beach. Imagine that! |
