1928 hurricane - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com
Interesting map detailing the path and size of the 1928 storm which hit 85 years ago today. Also note the cross section of the levy around Lake Okeechobee at the time (which failed and cost many lives) and what the dike is now. It is widely recognized that the current dike is not adequate due to pressures to keep lake levels high for drinking water supplies. Excess is then directed east and west, not south.
