Does Rudy Giuliani’s rant mean civil discourse in politics a lost cause?

From today's Palm Beach Post editorial, click title for link:
Yet Giuliani’s latest tirade reminds us that somehow too much of what used to be our reasoned and thoughtful critique of policies has turned into hate-filled nonsense. Somehow having different views on how best to provide health care, or keep America safe has become a battle between people who love America and people who do not.
Disagreement no longer represents reasonable differences over which path is correct, but rather proof that one side is composed of wicked people who do not want America to succeed. It is absolutist politics that makes differences of opinion a form of villainy.

Perhaps this base form of politics exists because many Americans now see the political system as a game to win, rather than a process of mutual compromise. Too many have decided raising money and rallying the base works best through fear and hate instead of inspiration and optimism. Telling people who to blame and then detest is easy.
All you needed to see evidence of this locally was at last night's candidate forum. Remember, the debate at the Lake Worth Playhouse is on March 2. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the debate starting around 6:45 p.m.
