The good news is that more people are riding bikes as part of their regular transportation choices. Statewide, 116 bicycle riders were killed in accidents in 2013, up from 76 in 2010. Accidents involving Florida bicycle riders increased from 4,600 in 2010 to 6,058 in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.
Nationwide, bicycle deaths have been around 700 a year for the last decade. The high was 786 in 2005, and the low was 623 in 2010.
Increasing traffic, environmental concerns and exercise-happy Americans are combining to get people to again take up a mode of travel they used in their youth. About 13 million bicycles sold for about $6.1 billion in 2012, up from about 10.2 million bicycles sold for about $5.6 billion in 2009, according to the National Bicycle Dealers Association.
