You mean the no´s took over 1000 votes in three and a half weeks. Those people are powerful.
What a dismal turnout, but the right result on building heights.
Now that the current Commission will stand for an additional 5 months, we will have plenty of time to see the development of a 4 story hotel---or not.
BTW--how is the other anti Revenue increase lawsuit making out on the 3 story Smith Property development?
It would seem that the sitting majority of the Commission needs to work on their skills in Leadership and "Getting the Word out".
Loretta should have spent her money onher house instead of the PAC. Mixed up priorities for sure!
its hysterical how the percentages play out almost the same in most LW elections......the "cavers" seem to get 6-10% more votes than the "pavers"......yet its only a couple hundred total vote difference....welcome to Lake Worth Politics, where your vote truly does matter! Serioulsly, its almost scary how much your votes counts here!
Why didn't all the petition signers come out to vote? This should have been a mandate, but it wasn't. Loretta didn't get her voters out and neither did Skippy. This vote should have been 60-40, at least or even more.

One of these days, we want people to think of Lake Worth in the same way they think of Key West, Santa Barbara or any other low-rise city that attracts dollars and people."

Huh? I think Pinkie the Blogging Revisionist Clown has a point. The one thing that Key West and Santa Barbara lack is hotels. Gee wiz, Greg, how in the world did you lose this vote against dim wits like this?
hey mr flashlight.... it takes alot of volunteers to get your message out, not to mention money,to win an election. where were you?
I'm neither paver or caver, I've lived in and owned homes in this City since 1999. I'm a business owner as well.
Lake Worth has a unique spirit, a unique mix of people (one of the reasons our politics seem so divided, I think) and a lot to offer.
We have wonderful historic neighborhoods that are, in fact, unique and worth preserving ala Key West. We have a great down town area that is walkable and artsy, lots of great music. We have a beautiful/wonderful beach/Casino that is attracting so many people the parking is limited. We have a wonderful waterfront golf course, we have a beautiful kayak trail, public docks and more islands are coming which attract birds and wildlife. We have a wonderful waterfront park, Bryant Park which attracts culture and arts events. We have a great new Publix too.
I can't think of another eastern city in Palm Beach County that has as much open water front (Ocean and Intracoastal) preserved for its citizens and public.
All great things that do attract people like myself, professional, educated, high tax bracket, to this City. But I do want to keep 6 story buildings out of my neighborhood. I do recall the Gulfstream Hotel operating quite well for many years without a parking deck. I'm not against redevelopment if its done smartly, it is in character for the neighborhood, and it doesn't permit the destruction of historic homes (which is what happened on Federal Hwy for that townhome complex with brick that was never finsihed).
I'm not sure what that makes me, but I voted Yes.
1,700 signatures and 1,200 votes? Interesting
to 10:16 yes, the gulfstream was open, but it has not been profitable since the early 90s alot of the homes you call historic were in disrepair. have you ever driven the west of dixie neighborhoods and seen the blight and unpaved roads. where will the money come from to fix all this. two six story hotels would bring hundreds of jobs, utility dollars, tax dollars and tourist dollars. whats your alternate plan?
Dear 10:16, What you may genuinely be unaware of is that almost every single one of those wonderful attractive amenities you mentioned only came to be because people lined up on the side you call "Pavers" and fought like Hell to make them happen.
Those would be the very same "Pavers" that fought like Hell to get PBSO in the first place and had to fight again to keep them here.
What does that make you? LUCKY -- that someone else has been willing to get their hands dirty, their reputations trashed, their jobs threatened and their hearts broken fighting to make Lake Worth such a wonderful place. But thanks for voting.
Abacoa to open a new hotel
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/local/new-hotel-in-abacoa-to-open-next-winter/nWqwp/
Interesting that the new hotel in Abacoa is 4 story.
Note from the article,"The plan calls for hotel guests to park in the nearby 1,000-space public parking garage."
What is "nearby?" How many stories will it be on how much land? The only place parking can be built for the Gulfstream is on the western half of the property. Abacoa, although try as they might, is not an urban location.
These people are fixated on four stories. Such foolishness. They don't get the fact that parking is a requirement or that a viable urban hotel in LW would require more than 4 stories. They compare us to other cities that have completely different assets and geography.
In reality - the Yes people could care less if a 1/2 a story was built. They want NOTHING. They say they want "smart" development but they don't even know what that is since they are not planners, developers, land use attorneys, economic development professionals, or professional anything. They are a bunch of clown crybabies who don't know what it takes to get things done. They are good a stopping things. Much easier than finding solutions that create results.
Results? Why do they need any results? Their results are
NOTHING!
You don't sell profitable hotels. The Gulfstream was never a profitable hotel.
The 4 story Abacoa hotel depicted in the article cannot be built here in Lake Worth (now) . If you look at the rendering, the architectural details that make the building look nice would most likely take it to 50 feet or more.
We could only build it here if you chop off the details and make it boxier. But how quaint.
The professional planner vote yes people disagree
