Since Delray gets so many more turtle nests than Lake Worth, does that mean we have no Indian skeletons? i guess even the Stanton skeletons don't help.
South Florida is covered with pre-Columbian sites related to Calusa, Jeaga, Tequesta and Ais... unfortunately many are detroyed unwittingly. So it's always interesting when a site is uncovered, and historical markers identifying who was here and when are great. Wish their was more interest in ancient Florida. But I've never understood why archaeologists need to consult with the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes for guidance. Neither existed in the region before 1730 or so and have no cultural connection. Careful reinternment after study seems pretty obvious.
One of the people who tried to promote early Florida Indian culture was a gentleman named E.G.Barnhill. He was an early photographic pioneer and part time archaeologist.Years ago he excavated numerous indian mounds in the area which is now the Sanctuary development in Boca Raton. It was called Ancient America and the entrance was on US1.A very large concrete sailboat marked the entrance. Even though Mr. Barnhill did this as money making venture he did try to educate the public on early florida cultures. With advent of Disney type attractions came the demise of Barnhills ventures.Much can be learned about Barnhill and his art and ventures with an internet search. You can also contact the Boca Raton Historical Society.
Thanks for bring EG Barnhill up, Phil... that attraction was before my time, and sadly is another example of how some major sites got little protection even if documented and used for tourism. The most impressive in our area are long gone, with the exception of Mound City in the Corbett and some mounds south of the lake. The old Boyton mounds are obscured or gone. Best SoFla spots are Calusa sites in SW Florida. If you know what you're looking at, a paddle trip from around Goodland south to Cape Sable will reveal hundreds.
